Every year, thousands of people plan a trip to Ladakh, and almost everyone has the same question:

“How much does a Ladakh trip actually cost?”

The short answer is that a Ladakh trip costs anywhere between ₹25,000 and ₹2.5 lakh, depending on your travel style, accommodation choices, transportation, and the places you visit.

If you’re a backpacker, you can comfortably explore Ladakh in around ₹25,000-30,000. If you’re travelling as a couple or with family, your budget will be higher.

Most articles on the internet either try to sell tour packages or provide very generic estimates. In this guide, I’m sharing my personal experience along with actual costs to help you plan your trip better.

My Experience Travelling in Ladakh

author travelling in Leh Ladakh during tourist season

The first time I travelled to Ladakh was in 2024.

I had just completed my BCA and decided not to join TCS even after receiving an offer. Instead, I wanted to explore a different path and travel.

I found an opportunity to volunteer at a guesthouse in Leh for around three months. The guesthouse provided a basic stipend, which helped me cover my living expenses while experiencing Ladakh as a slow traveller.

Unlike most tourists who visit for 5-7 days, I stayed longer, travelled slowly, used local transportation whenever possible, made local friends, and learned many practical ways to save money.

This guide is based on those experiences and observations from multiple tourist seasons.

Transportation Costs

flight to Leh Ladakh
Delhi to Leh bus journey
Royal Enfield Himalayan rental in Leh

Transportation is usually the biggest expense for most travellers visiting Ladakh.

Flight Cost to Leh

Flight prices vary significantly depending on the season.

SeasonApprox Cost
May₹5,000 – ₹6,000
June to September₹10,000 – ₹15,000

Booking your flights in advance can save a considerable amount of money.

Bus Cost to Ladakh

A direct bus from Delhi to Leh generally costs around:

₹1,800

This is one of the cheapest ways to reach Ladakh, although it takes considerably longer than flying.

Taxi Cost

Shared taxis from Manali to Leh generally cost:

₹2,500 – ₹3,000 per person

Private taxis are much more expensive but offer flexibility.

Bike Rental Cost

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is probably the most popular bike you’ll see in Ladakh.

Rental prices usually start from:

₹1,400 per day

Prices vary based on the bike model and season.

Personal Car Cost

If you’re travelling in your own car, costs will depend on:

  • Fuel prices
  • Vehicle mileage
  • Number of passengers
  • Route chosen

For groups, travelling by personal car can be surprisingly economical.

Tempo Traveller Cost

For larger groups:

₹2,000 – ₹2,500 per person

The final cost depends on the route and group size

Accommodation Costs in Ladakh

budget guesthouse in Leh Ladakh
backpacker hostel in Leh

One of the best things about Ladakh is that there are accommodation options for every budget.

Backpacker Hostels

₹500 – ₹800 per night

Perfect for solo travellers and backpackers.

Guesthouses

₹800 – ₹2,000 per night

In my opinion, guesthouses offer the best value for money and a more authentic experience.

Premium Hotels

₹5,000 – ₹15,000+ per night

Luxury properties like Grand Dragon and similar hotels cater to travellers looking for premium comfort.

Personally, I enjoyed staying in guesthouses more than hotels. They are often quieter, cheaper, and allow you to connect with local people.

I particularly like the Sankar Road area because it’s peaceful while still being close to Leh Market.

Food Costs in Ladakh

local food in Leh Ladakh
budget restaurant in Leh market

Food expenses depend entirely on your lifestyle and eating preferences.

Budget Traveller

₹200 – ₹400 per day

Average Traveller

₹500 – ₹1,000 per day

Premium Dining

₹1,000+ per day

Ladakh has plenty of options including:

  • Indian food
  • Tibetan food
  • Ladakhi cuisine
  • Vegan cafés
  • European restaurants

For most travellers, a food budget of ₹500-800 per day is comfortable.

Travel Costs Between Popular Places

Exploring Ladakh beyond Leh can significantly affect your budget.

Leh to Nubra Valley

  • Shared Taxi: ₹3,000 – ₹4,000
  • Private Taxi: ₹10,000 – ₹15,000

Leh to Pangong Lake

  • Shared Taxi: ₹3,000 – ₹4,000
  • Private Taxi: ₹10,000 – ₹15,000

Leh to Hanle

  • Shared Taxi: ₹8,000 – ₹9,000

Leh to Tso Moriri

  • Shared Taxi: ₹2,000 – ₹3,000
  • Private Taxi: ₹10,000 – ₹15,000

Alternatively, you can rent a bike and travel independently if you’re comfortable riding in mountain conditions.

Many travellers ask this question before visiting.

In my personal experience, Ladakh is one of the safest places I have travelled in India.

Money-Saving Tips for Ladakh

Here are a few tricks that helped me save money while travelling in Ladakh.

1. Stay in Guesthouses

Guesthouses are often cheaper than hotels and provide a better local experience.

2. Avoid Unnecessary Local Taxis

Many short trips inside Leh can be done by walking or using local buses.

3. Use Local Buses

A local bus ride may cost around ₹20, while taxis often charge several hundred rupees for the same route.

4. Avoid Expensive Airport Transfers

Airport taxis usually charge ₹600-800 to reach Leh town.

A cheaper option is to take public transport towards Leh Gate and then continue from there.

5. Eat Where Locals Eat

Local restaurants are usually cheaper and often serve better food than tourist-focused cafés.

6. Negotiate Politely

Politeness goes a long way in Ladakh. Respectful conversations often lead to better prices and helpful recommendations.

7. Make Local Friends

Local contacts can help you discover affordable stays, transportation options, and hidden gems.

8. Try Community-Based Stays

Community-run accommodations often provide great experiences at reasonable prices.

Ladakh is one of the safest places I've travelled to in India.
