One of the first questions people ask while planning a Ladakh trip is:

“How to reach Ladakh?”

The good news is that reaching Ladakh has become much easier than it was a few years ago.

You can reach Ladakh by:

  • Flight
  • Bus

The best option depends on your budget, travel style, and available time.

How I Reached Ladakh

travelling to ladakh by road
By Aman T.

The first time I travelled to Ladakh was in 2024 after completing my BCA.

Instead of taking a conventional route, I decided to volunteer at a guesthouse in Leh and spend several months there.

Over time, I met travellers arriving by flight, bike, bus, shared taxi, and personal vehicles. Every option has its advantages and challenges.

Reach Ladakh by Flight

For most travellers, flying is the easiest way to reach Ladakh.

Airport Name

Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (Leh)

Flight Duration

Delhi → Leh

Approximately 1.5 hours

Flight Cost

SeasonApprox Cost
May₹5,000-6,000
June-September₹10,000-15,000

Pros

  • Fastest option
  • Saves time
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • More expensive
  • Sudden altitude gain

Reach Ladakh by Bus

A Ladakh bike trip is on many travellers’ bucket lists.

Popular routes:

Manali → Leh

More adventurous.

Srinagar → Kargil → Leh

Better for acclimatisation.

Rental Cost

₹1,400/day onwards

Best Time

June to September

Reach Ladakh by Personal Car

If you’re travelling with friends or family, a personal car can be economical.

Advantages

  • Flexible itinerary
  • More comfortable
  • Better for groups

Challenges

  • Mountain roads
  • Long driving hours
  • Fuel expenses

Reach Ladakh by Train

A lot of people search for:

“How to reach Ladakh by train?”

The reality is:

There is currently no railway station in Ladakh.

The nearest major railway stations are:

  • Jammu Tawi
  • Srinagar
  • Chandigarh

From there, you’ll need to continue by road.

Best Route to Reach Ladakh

Srinagar → Kargil → Leh

Recommended for:

  • First-time visitors
  • Families
  • Travellers concerned about altitude

Manali → Leh

Recommended for:

  • Adventure travellers
  • Bike riders
  • Road trip enthusiasts

Personally, I usually suggest the Srinagar route for first-time visitors because the altitude gain is more gradual.
