I see this question almost every day in travel groups:
“What is the best time to visit Ladakh?”
The problem is that everyone has a different answer.
Some people recommend June, some prefer September, while others only visit during winter.
The truth is that there is no single best month for everyone. It depends on what kind of traveller you are and what you want from your trip.
If you’ve read my previous blogs, you already know that I’m a slow traveller. I spend around three months in Ladakh during the tourist season, and over time I’ve seen how the experience changes from month to month.
In this guide, I’ll share my personal experience and help you decide which season is right for you.
Quick Answer: Best Time to Visit Ladakh
| Month | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| May | My Personal Favourite |
| June | First-Time Visitors |
| July | Peak Season |
| August | Road Trips & Families |
| September | Less Crowded |
| October | Adventure Travellers |
| November-March | Snow Lovers |
My Experience Living in Ladakh During the Tourist Season
The first time I travelled to Ladakh was in 2024 after completing my BCA.
Instead of joining TCS, I decided to volunteer at a guesthouse in Leh for a few months. That decision allowed me to experience Ladakh beyond the typical tourist itinerary.
Unlike most travellers who visit for a week, I spent months living there, talking to locals, volunteering, working remotely, and travelling slowly.
Because of that experience, I started noticing how different Ladakh feels in May, June, July, September and even during winter.
May: My Personal Favourite Month

If you ask me personally, May is probably the best month to visit Ladakh.
The tourist season is just starting, which means:
- Less crowd
- Cheaper transportation
- Better hotel availability
- Fresh mountain views
- Peaceful atmosphere
Many workers, drivers, café owners and tourism staff are just arriving for the season, so Ladakh feels alive without feeling overcrowded.
For travellers who enjoy slow travel, photography and peaceful mornings, May is hard to beat.
June to September: Peak Tourist Season

June to September is the busiest period in Ladakh.
During these months:
- Schools are closed
- Families travel during vacations
- Most roads are open
- Weather is pleasant
- Tourist attractions are fully operational
This is usually the safest recommendation for first-time visitors.
However, expect:
- Higher flight prices
- Higher hotel prices
- More traffic
- More crowds at popular locations
September: Best for Fewer Crowds
If I had to choose a second favourite month, it would be September.
By this time:
- Most roads are still open
- Weather remains comfortable
- Tourist numbers start dropping
- Photography conditions improve
September gives you the benefits of summer without some of the peak-season chaos.
Winter in Ladakh (November to March)
Winter is a completely different experience.
You’ll find:
- Snowfall
- Frozen landscapes
- Very few tourists
- Cheaper accommodation
But you’ll also experience:
- Extreme cold
- Limited tourism activities
- Reduced transportation options
This season is best for experienced travellers who specifically want a winter adventure.
Best Time for a Road Trip to Ladakh
For most travellers, road trip season starts around May or June.
There are two main routes:
Srinagar → Kargil → Leh
Good for acclimatisation.
Manali → Leh
More adventurous and scenic.
In 2026, the Manali-Leh Highway opened around mid-May.
Road opening dates change every year depending on snowfall.
Best Time for Bike Trips
For bike riders, June to September is ideal.
You’ll have:
- Open highways
- Better weather
- Easier access to Pangong and Nubra
Best Time for Photography
My recommendation:
September
Reasons:
- Cleaner skies
- Better light
- Less traffic
- Fewer tourists in photos
Best Time for Budget Travellers
If you’re trying to save money:
May
and
September
are usually the best choices.
You’ll often find:
- Better hotel deals
- Lower transportation costs
- Less demand
